Director, Laboratory Services

Job Description

In this leadership role, you will play a key role in the department, as you will be responsible for directing, establishing, and planning the overall policies and goals for Island Hospital Laboratory. Works closely with hospital staff, department directors, and physicians to ensure the highest standards of quality and service are maintained. Sets goals and develops operating and capital budget for Laboratory.  Writes and updates procedures in conjunction with staff and establishes new policies as needed.  Reviews policies and procedures annually to ensure that employees have current information needed to perform testing. Develops new business and works with medical staff and pathologists to determine appropriate testing panels.  Supervises lab staff including a Supervisor and Lead Technologists in Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Phlebotomy.  

What you will be doing:

  • Manages Laboratory staff including exempt and non-exempt employees.
  • Able to work in all areas of the Laboratory as needed.
  • Uses and maintains computer program for Laboratory in Meditech.
  • Utilizes Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for presentations or business development.
  • Responsible for all quality control and regulatory compliance including JCAHO, CAP, FDA, and OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge of Medicare regulations and CPT coding.
  • Responsible for financial decisions in all Laboratory departments including budgeting, capital equipment, service contracts, purchasing and billing.
  • Responsible for human resource functions including: maintaining records on employee certifications, competency, hiring, termination, and performance assessment.
  • Responsible for approving and ensuring accurate employee timecards.
  • Knowledge of infection control practices, Chemical and Biological Terrorism procedures, DOT and NON-DOT drug screen collection regulations and Autologous Blood Donation regulations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and can identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.
  • Assigns workers to duties and supervises performance of tests in field of microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, serology and urinalysis.
  • Reports results of tests using hospital information system.
  • Uses CQI principles/practices to assure attainment of goals.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to interact positively with Administration, Directors, Managers, Supervisors, peers, co-workers, subordinates, patients and visitors. Addresses customer concerns in a timely manner and maintains professional, positive attitude during stressful and busy situations.
  • Must meet regular attendance standard and must stay at or below average sick leave utilization levels.

Your Qualifications:

  • Advanced education and completion of an approved Medical Technology program. 
  • A minimum of five (5) years of applicable Laboratory experience required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a supervisory or management capacity. 
  • Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Certification Agency (NCA) preferred.
  • CLIA Regulatory Education requirements to work in a Complex Laboratory.
  • Certified by the State of Washington as a Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.

Location: Anacortes, WA, Onsite
Schedule: Full-Time / Days
Salary: $49.59/hr - $74.39/hr
